After the first kickoff of the NFL season, it is time to kick off the NFL cookout season. Whether you will be cheering on the Oakland Raiders or another squad, your friends and family members will savor juicy steaks, crunchy corn on the cob, and rich cream pies all grilled to perfection. However, just as NFL players on the gridiron must wear protective gear, it is vital that you also adhere to various safety standards. Here are some tips to make your NFL cookout as safe as it is fun (and tasty):
1. Handle food properly
It is important to handle food properly, regardless of whether you will cook it for your NFL cookout. Be particularly careful with foods with high moisture and protein. These types of foods are particularly vulnerable to bacteria that cause human diseases, and include cheese, chicken, custards, eggs, fish, meat, potato salad, and shellfish
In the case that you purchase take out dishes from restaurants, you have two safe options. One is to consume the food within two hours after buying it. Another option is to cool the food under 41F and then reheat it to 140F, prior to serving it.
2. Make everything clean as a bean
Before preparing food for your NFL cookout, follow some basic steps. Wash your hands vigorously (for 20 seconds) with warm water and soap, before preparing any food. Furthermore, use warm water and soap to clean your cooking utensils and cooking areas, prior to using them.
3. Cook food at the right temperatures
It would be easy to assume that we should grill all foods at the same temperatures. However, you should actually cook particular types of foods at certain temperatures:
 Prime Rib: 130 F
 Beefsteak: 140 F
 Pork: 155 F
 Ground Beef 160 F
 Poultry/Custards/Cream Pies: 165 F
You should use a meat thermometer or cooking thermometer to ensure that all foods reach the right temperature. Furthermore, when reheating cold foods, make sure that their internal temperatures hits 165 F.
4. Grill safely
You can take several steps to ensure that the actual grilling at your NFL cookout is as safe as possible. In 2005, gas and charcoal grills caused $137 million in property damage. Avoid becoming a statistic! Never use an outdoor grill indoors. Position your grill a minimum of 10 feet from any other objects (i.e. house, shrubs, etc.) prior to grilling. When you use a charcoal grill, use starter fluid exclusively to light your charcoal. If you detect a gas leak in your grill, turn off the grill momentarily. Avoid lighting the grill until you have repaired the grill. Finally, keep all children and pets far from the grill, until it has cooled down thoroughly.
Many of us cannot resist NFL games and NFL cookouts. If you plan to host an NFL cookout at your home, make it the best cookout possible and break a leg. However, also use proper safety measures to ensure that people and property remain unharmed as you grill in honor of the gridiron!
